Right and Left Brain Dominance -What Does it Mean? & Why Does it Matter?

WHAT DOES LEFT-BRAIN, RIGHT-BRAIN DOMINANCE MEAN?

There are two hemispheres of the brain, one that deals with logic and the other that deals with the creative processes and intuition. I took a test online and was given the following results: “your percentage score for the right brain is 45%. Your percentage score for the left brain is 55%.” So what are the implications of these results? Also, how can I use these results to assist me with more practical pursuits like finding a fulfilling career?

Because I am left-hemisphere dominant this means that I’m more logical and verbally oriented. If I was more dominant on the right-side this would mean that I tend to think in terms of whole concepts. I would be more attuned to visual thinking and images. In addition, the two hemispheres of the brain are responsible for controlling the different parts of the body. As backward as this may seem, the right hemisphere controls everything on the left side of the body and the left-hemisphere controls everything on the right.

HOW IS ANY OF THIS INFORMATION RELEVANT?

Knowing the way our brain processes information can help us to know ourselves better. For example, one area in which this information may serve valuable is in choosing a career. According to an article on ehow.com, for left-dominant people careers as an engineer, programmer, technician, scientist and stock broker may be the most fulfilling jobs and best fits. For right-dominant people, jobs such as interior design, retail, counseling psychology or any jobs that allow for freedom to move around in the outdoors or that deals with helping people solve problems are good fits.

Tests that show hemispheric dominance gives us an idea of where we are now in terms of our thinking and the way our brain is processing information. However, the results of these tests are not definitive or finite and can be changed. For example, by solving analytical puzzles a person might increase the functions of their left hemisphere. Moreover, a person who wanted to activate their right hemisphere more might take a painting or dancing class.

IN LAYMAN TERMS PLEASE

In terms of choosing a career I guess it says that we can all choose to be anything we want. If we’re not feeling fulfilled in whatever it is that we’re doing all we have to do are things like dance or solve more puzzles.
