Natural Sodas Without Benzene: Sodium Benzoate (E211) & Ascorbic Acid

In a previous article I talked about some ingredients that you may want to avoid in the foods you eat and here’s another. It’s called benzene which is the result of sodium benzoate (a preservative) and ascorbic acid (vitamin c) coming together to form a carcinogen with cancerous consequences. You can usually find this ingredient in sodas but it can also be hiding in juices and other things too. Anyway, I couldn’t find any articles online about sodas that were free of this ingredient and so I figured I’d do my own research and list some brands that are right here.

The Natural Options
1. Izze sodas are all natural and are free of benzene.
2. San Pellegrino usually known for their sparkling water products also have sparkling fruit flavored sodas that use natural ingredients.
3. Make your own soda at home with champagne yeast or with a soda maker.

Some Not So Natural Options
As a rule please always check the ingredients as they can change over time. What I’ve found so far is that the regular versions (i.e. not diet) of Pepsi, 7-Up, and Sierra Mist (which is also free of high fructose corn syrup) do not contain benzene.
